SUNDAY WITHOUT LOVE

Ragnar Kjartansson

On the banks of a small body of water on the Renon Plateau, Icelandic artist Ragnar Kjartansson presents the world premiere at TRANSART25 of the performance Sunday Without Love, a site-specific work that fuses music, theatre and visual arts. In this idyllic setting, Kjartansson composes an evocative tableau vivant: musicians and performers, elegantly dressed in costumes inspired by a folk postcard from the 1960s, perform and loop a refrain inspired by a 1996 song by German artist Rocko Schamoni. Against this backdrop of absolute stillness, the words of the song pierce us most mercilessly: “Baby, you must learn to live without love” is a melancholic admonition that makes us reflect with tender bitterness on longing, nostalgia and acceptance.
